Extractions

Simple Extractions

A simple extraction is relatively easy procedure and requires little recovery time. A simple extraction is performed on teeth that are clearly visible in the mouth, and not hiding beneath the gums. After we have thoroughly numbed the surrounding area, we will use a tool called an elevator to facilitate loosening of the tooth from its socket. After the tooth is reasonably loosened, we will use forceps to fully remove the tooth. Simple extraction is usually a quick procedure, and often many teeth can be removed at once if necessary. We will instruct you on precautions to take after having your extractions, and there will be little disruption to your normal habits other than a slight ache and a need to avoid certain foods for a few days.

Surgical Extractions

For teeth that are not clearly visible in the mouth, we must use a different approach. For example, if a tooth has broken, leaving only the root intact. Sometimes, like with most wisdom teeth removal—the tooth just hasn’t grown past the gum yet. Whatever the situation, surgical extraction is the best option for having it removed.  During a surgical extraction, we will create a small incision in the gum to access the tooth. Then, remove the tooth either intact or by breaking it into smaller pieces. Generally, surgical extraction can be performed with a local anesthetic. You will feel slight pressure but no pain. Surgical extractions usually involve a more diligent aftercare routine in the hours and days after your procedure, and we will provide you with after care instructions about how best to care for yourself and your mouth.

At Lopez Dental Care, our first preference is to save your natural teeth through root canals, crowns, or fillings. But having a tooth pulled in adulthood is sometimes necessary. Although permanent teeth were meant to last a lifetime, there are a number of reasons why tooth extraction may be needed. A very common reason involves a tooth that is too badly  damaged, from trauma or decay, to be repaired.
